Our first block photo has arrived!

I hope everyone is as excited as I am now, after seeing the fabrics and the center panel! This is really going to be a beautiful quilt. I'm really looking forward to all of your War of 1812 ancestor and research stories, and I think the commemorative book will be inspirational! (Everyone who participates will get a copy of the book in PDF form.)

A few things to remember as you work on your quilt blocks - Every block submission will also need to include the Google form and a photo, preferably digital, of you holding your completed quilt block.  And while the deadline for finishing the quilt blocks isn't until late February 2016, we've received the first photo from Lorraine Kish, of the two blocks that she's already completed. Aren't they beautiful!!!

Please check the posts on this blog or the Facebook page if you have questions, or feel free to email us at geneaquilters1812@gmail.com.

And please share our quilt flyer as often as you can! Email us if you need or want a PDF copy in either full or halfpage size.  Anyone can participate in this Star-Spangled Banner Quilt project by either by making a quilt block, submitting ancestor research stories, or by contributing financially through our PayPal account.  All monetary donations will be given directly to the War of 1812 Preserve the Pensions fund at the end of the project, to further their work of digitizing those wonderful pension files!

Fat Quarters are available!

We've finally got a few yards of all the fabrics and are cutting them into fat quarters. A set of one fat quarter of each of all the 6 fabrics plus postage comes out to $25. Plus we can include a couple block patterns if you'd like. If you're interested, please send an email to geneaquilters1812@gmail.com and I will reply with the PayPal info, or where to send a check, instead of posting it publicly.

This quilt is going to be beautiful, and remember that everyone who participates, either by submitting a block, writing an article about their 1812 ancestor, and/or donating monetarily, is automatically entered in the final drawing for the completed quilt!

The fabric choices

If you are interested in participating in the Star-Spangled Banner Quilt project, this post summarizes the requirements for blocks submissions to be considered for the quilt.

CENTER PANEL

The center panel of the quilt is a single piece of custom-made fabric, designed by Pat Richley-Erickson, with technical assistance using Photoshop Elements 13 from Teri Chaffin and Terri Kallio.

FABRIC REQUIREMENTS

For your pieced squares to be considered for the quilt, they must use all or any combination of the following fabrics without exception:

SQUARE SIZE

10 inch squared-up final size, pressed, per Be part of the 1812 Star-Spangled Quilt Project

PATTERN

Blocks must be made using the any combination from the fabrics listed above, using only traditional, old-fashioned block patterns. To keep with the historical theme of the quilt, no modern design blocks will be accepted. Do not embellish the blocks in any way - no embroidery, paints, applique, beads, charms. For suggestions with links to free patterns, see  Resources for Free Traditional Quilt Patterns

IMPORTANT - for your quilt square to be considered, you must

    •  a) your experience as a quilter, b) information about your 1812 pensioner, include name and service unit etc., or why this project is important to you (if you haven't found an 1812 pensioner in your research yet) and C) why you decided to participate in this quilt project.
  • Submit a photo of yourself holding your completed quilt square
  • Deadline: All blocks, submission forms and photographs must be received BY February 20, 2016. The address to mail the completed blocks to will be sent once the submission form is received.

Resources for free traditional quilt patterns

You might want to check out the following websites for quilt pattern ideas. Keep in mind if you wish to participate in the Star-Spangled Banner Quilt Project, starting Nov 2016, you must use some or all of the selected project fabric (nothing from your stash.) Also, the finished, squared-up block size must be 10" to be included in the quilt. Be sure to read:
Thinking of Carol Petranek, here are two color schemes (think light and dark and red, white and blue) for a pattern known as Greek Cross from About.com.

Maybe one of these About.com patterns will strike your fancy:

AllPeopleQuilt.com has some great patterns including Sister's Choice .

Patchwork Square also has some viable options:

Be part of the 1812 Star-Spangled Quilt Project

THE DETAILS:
The Genea-Quilters group will be creating a quilt themed to honor Francis Scott Key’s “Star-Spangled Banner”. The purpose of this project is to raise awareness and donate funds to the War of 1812 Preserve the Pensions Fund, supporting efforts to digitize the War of 1812 Pension Applications held by the US National Archives.

The quilt will be awarded at the completion of the project period by a random drawing from the names of those who have participated in the project in any, or all, of the following three ways:

1.   Create a block for the Star-Spangled Banner quilt.
To maintain a consistent look for the overall quilt, participants must follow the following recommendations for fabric choice, size, and block style.

§  FABRIC: Once the center panel has been created, fabric guidelines and recommendations including colors and manufacturers, will be displayed on the Genea-Quilters Blog. (Please check back around Nov 10th - notification will be made on Facebook and on the blog when the fabric guidelines are available. Thank you for your patience!)

§  SIZE: Finished trimmed block size must be squared to 10”.

§  PATTERN: Please choose any traditional-style block pattern. Suggestions and website links to block patterns will be available on the Genea-Quilters Blog.

Blocks will not be accepted for inclusion in the quilt if they contain applique or embellishment of any kind, such as paints, beads, charms, etc.

In order to be included in the final quilt, all block submissions must be accompanied by BOTH a completed official submission form, and a photograph of the entrant holding their quilt block. Submission forms will be available on the Genea-Quilters Blog.. Additional photographs are welcome. Submission forms and photographs are to be submitted with the quilt block, or sent digitally to GeneaQuilters1812@gmail.com. If a quilter has not returned their submission form, the quilt block may not be included in the final quilt.

2.  Submit an article for the accompanying e-book.
Submit an original article of no less than 250 words about your ancestor that participated in the War of 1812 in some way, OR how using digitized military records has enriched your own genealogy research.  Articles should be typed with minimal formatting, and may (but are not required to) include up to four photographs.

3.  Donate to the Star-Spangled Banner Quilt Fund.
A dedicated Pay-Pal account has been set up to accept donations which will be given to the Preserve the Pensions Fund at the close of the Star-Spangled Banner Quilt Project. All monetary donations to this account will go directly to the Preserve the Pensions fund at the completion of the Star-Spangled Banner Quilt Project. Donations may be made at http://tinyurl.com/QuiltDonate

In order to gain an entry into the final drawing for the quilt, a contributor’s name must accompany their monetary donation. Those wishing to remain anonymous may so indicate at the time of their donation, but will be also entered into the drawing for the quilt unless they also specifically request to be excluded.  Unless anonymity is requested, donors’ names (but not contribution amounts) may be included in the memorial booklet being prepared about the quilt, the quilters, and their ancestor stories.

Additional Information:
All submissions to the Star-Spangled Banner Quilt Project, including all quilt blocks, articles, and monetary or material donations, will become the property of Genea-Quilters. Any written submissions will be given appropriate credit and attribution to the author, along with permission for that author to post or publish all or any part of their original work in any other form.

Any costs associated with the creation and promotion of the Star-Spangled Banner Quilt will be handled with separate donations made by arrangement with the Star-Spangled Banner Quilt coordinators. Possible additional expenses may include quilt construction, machine quilting, transportation, as well as memorial book and other printing expenses, if any.

Monies received will be reported monthly via the Genea-Quilters Blog. Project progress and any additional notifications or information will also be updated regularly on the Genea-Quilters Blog. All contributions made to the Genea-Quilters Star Spangled Banner Quilt Project PayPal account will be donated to the War of 1812 Preserve the Pensions Fund  at the completion of the project time period.

Participants may participate as much as they would like, however only one entry will be submitted per individual.

Everyone who contributes in at least one of the three ways listed above will receive a PDF copy of the Memorial book.

Winner will be chosen at random and the decision of the judges is final.
